Previously, the majority of brand owners applied a single standard for inspecting printed materials across different substrates, universally adopting Class 1 and 2 paper standards from ISO 12647-2 (corresponding to Fogra 39 and ISOCoated V2 ICC). Ignoring variations in printing methods, materials, or even processes, buyers insisted on a uniform standard, leading to numerous color discrepancy issues. This inspection criterion can be referred to as an absolute standard, with the practical inspection conducted based on absolute values.

Relative inspection, on the other hand, entails brand owners adopting distinct color standards tailored to the specific paper type or printing method employed. In practice, this approach also permits the use of the SCCA (Substrate Color Correction Array) paper white correction function, thereby aligning more closely with actual production scenarios and making it easier for factories to meet the criteria. Currently, brands like Microsoft and ColorLogic represent those embracing such tailored requirements.
